General Wayne Inn in Southold on the North Fork
October 19th, 2008 category: North Fork Neighborhoods, People and Places, Southold Real Estate
When we first moved to Southold, New York in 2002, there was a structure in our neighborhood called the General Wayne Inn.
Situated oddly, Sean’s father explained that he had in fact dined at this opulent eatery located in the residential area of Bayview- it was a destination spot often navigated on foot, as those in the area were able to combine a nice walk with a fine meal.
The building was abandoned when we viewed it, but still intact- clearly devastated by a fire of some sort, it was destined to deteriorate without immediate intervention.
Below are photos of this once-grand establishment, along with a recent town meeting addressing the uncertain future of this once glorious structure.
It has increasingly become an eyesore, due to the lack of maintenance and preservation that the owner was unable to provide for it.
I’d love to see it purchased and restored, but as the years go by, all elements worthy of restoration seemingly grow legs- where a sign once proclaimed it’s identity, there is now simply an empty and rotting post.

I visited and dined in the General Wayne Restaurant in the late 1960’s fairly frequently with my then fiancee. There was an outdoor patio for dining and dancing under the stars in the summer and elegant buffets on the weekends in the winter. The chef was world renowned and the General Wayne had many patrons.
My parents held their 50th wedding anniversary party there in 1989 and it had been extensively remodeled and much of the quaint charm removed by theatrical type lighting around the bar. I have numerous photographs.
While I understand that the residents do not want a restaurant in this locale (due to noise and such after hours) does the recent rezoning allow for a B&B to be established? If so, is there a realtor I can contact to discuss potential pricing and details.

Hi, Carol-
We’ve been intrigued with the property for some time, but it’s been quite sad watching the deterioration. Frankly, I’d love to stroll to a great restaurant, particularly in such a beautiful location.
There is a link to the town meeting; if you’d like us to pursue the status of the property, let us know. It seemed in limbo at the time of the post, but that may have changed- the public records will provide insight.
Thank you for your own insight- like Sean’s father, it sounds as though some nice memories are a part of that old “house”!
